About Janice Lynde, the Actress

MINI-BIO:

Janice Lynde is an accomplished industry professional who, while continuing to be in demand as an actress, has become one of the field’s most sought-after acting coaches and best-selling acting book authors. Her eclectic career spans many art disciplines & cultures.

REVIEW:

“In my directorial debut THE MARRIAGE UNDONE, Janice brought several moments that were beyond what I had envisioned for the part… I saw her do things in our rehearsal and I was so moved, that we locked them into her performance for the big screen. I still get teary eyed and chills when I watch my film and see the look of recognition in her character’s eyes of someone else who is in pain. She invented the part of Alice and transformed herself into a multi-dimensional character, not a cliché stereotype which would have been much easier to perform. I witnessed that Janice Lynde is one of those actresses with the magical ability to transform herself into other people from other places.”

SARAH NEAN BRUCE – Director, Producer, Award-Winning Indie Filmmaker

STAGE:

Janice’s arrival into show business came at early age as a prodigy child concert pianist.  Her picture appeared In Life Magazine for winning (in the same year) the prestigious Van Cliburn Piano Competition AND the talent competition in the Miss Teenage America Contest. She then opened for Vladimir Horovitz (the elderly Russian-America classical pianist considered one of the most distinguished pianists at any age) in concert.  Later a Metropolitan Opera Scholarship brought her to New York, where she was accepted by the famed Actor’s Studio.  Ms. Lynde soon found a welcome venue for both her musical and thespian abilities: Broadway, where she starred in BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE, APPLAUSE and PIPPIN, directed by the legendary Bob Fosse (who also directed her night club act).

Other Stage highlights include Off-Broadway’s Obie Awards for her work in the Joe Papp production SAMBO and PICNIC. She originated the lead role of Carnelle in THE MISS FIRECRACKER CONTEST, as well as receiving five Dramalogue Awards for Best Actress.  Her eclectic career return to the operatic stage, at the San Francisco Opera in the Premier Production of THE MERRY WIDOW, starring Frederica von Stade, aired on PBS’s GREAT PERFORMANCES.

BIG SCREEN:

A sampling of her film work consists of Garry Marshall’s PRETTY WOMAN, and MISSING PIECES (toplining Eric Idle, Robert Wuhl, and directed by Leonard Stern), as well as film festival favorite THE MARRIAGE UNDONE, directed by Sarah Nean Bruce and LETTER TO DAD, for which she earned the Cannes Film Festival Palme D’Or Award as BEST Supporting Actress.

SMALL SCREEN:

When television initially beckoned Ms. Lynde, she joined the original cast of the popular daytime drama THE YOUNG and THE RESTLESS. Her portrayal of Leslie Brooks, the tortured concert pianist, garnered her first Emmy Award, as well as four consecutive wins as “The Most Popular Female Star” in Daytime TV’s Annual Readers’ Poll.

Her second Emmy Nomination came on ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

She went on to star in her own musical variety show FROM JANICE WITH LOVE.

Janice’s prime-time credits include Oscar’s younger girlfriend on THE ODD COUPLE, QUINCY, WHO’S THE BOSS, SLEDGE HAMMER (released on DVD to rave reviews) and NIGHT COURT. Famed producer Norman Lear courted her multiple talents and tailored the television series ROXY specifically for her musical and comedy talents.

Other small screen roles span shows such as: CSI, COLD CASE, BOSTON LEGAL, THE OFFICE, NOTHING SACRED, and TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL. Additionally, Ms. Lynde appeared in the television movies SEARCHING FOR DAVID’S HEART (Disney/ABC), PROMISED LAND, DOING TIME ON MAPLE DRIVE, starring Jim Carrey, ABC’s A QUESTION OF SEX, directed by Tom Skerritt, and the acclaimed LIFE OF THE PARTY opposite Ann-Margret.
